Licorice

I started a new run of scarves, still in wool. These remind me of the licorice party mix. My husband is starting a small run using squares of red and gray. We had a lot of wool red and gray fabric and he is going to be making a small runner with it, he is still getting his warp on the loom. Next week I am going to Port Townsend, a great little town with a inactive fort. The fort still has beautiful old homes on it. Hopefully I will get some pictures. My sister volunteered to be a chaperon for her granddaughter and two other 12 year olds but then she became ill and instead of Port Townsend, she went to the hospital. So I am taking her place.  We are going to be gone a week and the kids will be learning the ecology of the area. Port Townsend it on the inter peninsula of the Olympic Peninsula. Google it, beautiful area. There will be about 40 students. I have been trying to gather all the things I will need for the trip, without having to spend too much money. I did have to buy a pair of boots, not the type that you wear in the city but more like the kind you muck out the barn. Don't want to spend any money that isn't on yarn. Last weekend we went to a fiber fest in a very small town just south of Spokane. It was a lot farther than I thought it would be but we did come back with some beautiful yarn and a little something else.

Traditional spinning wheel, probably made in the 1970's. So far we have not been able
to spin anything, although we are getting better getting the wool
on the leader.

My husband has been weaving on the little Rasmussen loom. The pattern is from "Simple Weaves." He is weaving for pillows. He has had some issues and has already cut off a sample. I am going to serge it and wash it to see what size it will be finished. I am still working on the wool scarves and need to finish the fringe. We are going on a road trip this Saturday and coming home with a surprise, not another loom but something else. Pictures will follow showing my find. Amy

LOOT!!   These are late birthday gifts from my sisters and I love it all.   Paper dolls from the 1940s and a purse from the same time....and a compact to go in it...and that is a sweet garden sign and homemade cards...I am blessed.  Today we had lunch at my house....a sort of working lunch to begin talks about the upcoming Kid Kamp here...it takes lots of planning.....everyone brought something to eat that began with my first name...the letter D..there was no discussion and I thought we would have trays of deviled eggs and doughnuts...but only one tray of the eggs, and a rich Chicken Divan casserole, a Deli meat tray, dill pickles, dip for some fruit..and for dessert a Dr. Pepper cake....and it was so good.....so a fun lunch, planning started and a good day...

Wool

It may be spring and our weather is suppose to be in the 70's but I am weaving wool. We bought some Brown Sheep wool yarn, thinking it might work for rugs but really it is a soft feeling wool and my husband rejected it for rugs, so I am using it for scarves. These will be sub-arctic weather scarves. The only thing I am not liking about the pattern is that I am bringing the second color up one side. I am twisting the yarn every second stitch and I think I should have done it every 8 stitches. You live and learn and since I did not make a sample, this is just the way it will be. This pattern is from "A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns" page 24.  I like this pattern because I can change the pattern by using a different treading and tie up. This is the first pattern on the page (#74) and I think I will try # 75 next since I do not have to change the tie up. I probably only have enough for 2 long scarves on this warp. We also ordered a color called "cherry delight", it looked like a deep red but when it came it was a bright pink. I think the pink would look good in this pattern too.  Enjoy, Amy

Wish this was this year's photo....but not yet.....this is from last year and hoping to have more of the same.  This year, in our MG demo garden I am giving a class on Growing Food in Small Spaces and have decided that I am making one of those small spaces and weighing everything I get out of it this year.   I am documenting in photos and words and hoping to present it as a Lunch and Learn for next year's classes.   It will be interesting to see just how much food CAN be grown in a tiny spot.   More as this season goes along.  Believe I will plant some of my first seeds next week if weather permits.

Lazy

I have been very lazy lately, actual some people who know me might say that I have always been lazy. I have been weaving a little bit and doing some reading a little bit but that is about all. My house could use a good cleaning, it is not easy living with 2 cats and 2 dogs. It is a job just keeping up with the hair on everything! Those of you that have animals know what I am saying. It is a beautiful day today, yesterday it was gray and rainy but today the sun is shining and makes you think of spring. My neighbor has her crocus blooming. We need to plan what is going into our front flower beds since my husband removed some of our plants. My sisters and I got together this week to celebrate my sister's birthday and to do a little gossip. I made her a purse out of a Reader's Digest condensed book. It really isn't anything that you can really use but is a cute little piece. I am planning to make some more. I also sold two pillows on etsy, yeah.

Yes, I am still here. Last weekend my husband and I took our rugs and a few other things to a craft sale. It is the first time we have tried to sell any of our woven things. It was very busy and we were able to sell enough in the first 1/2 hour to pay for our booth. I talked to a lot of people who were interested in weaving. Since then we have had a woman bring us some wool and another woman who asked us to donate to two auctions. Actual it would have been nice if she had wanted to buy something instead of asking me to donate something, but I have donated things before and maybe someone will be interested in our weavings after seeing them. I was very tired by the time that the sale was over but we did do very well. I am still trying to finish a scarf from the tencel warp. After it is done, my husband has tied on to the scarf warp that he did before Christmas and I am going to weave a couple more scarves. I also have a scarf warp on my little Kombo that needs to be finished too. My husband is going to use the 8 shaft Gilmore and weave some kitchen towels. We ordered some cottolin from Paradise Fibers in Spokane, I ordered them in the morning on one day and they arrived the next day ! Love that Paradise Fibers, when I order I always try to order what they show that they have in stock.
